Solutions to improve production efficiency in winter crop 2016
(Baonghean) - This winter crop, Nghe An strives to plant over 40,000 hectares of various crops and over 3,000 hectares of fish for the third crop. At this time, some localities have started winter crop production. Many policies to support farmers' production have also been applied by localities.
In the winter crop of 2015, the weather was generally favorable, so the area and productivity of some crops increased. In particular, corn production, in addition to contributing to the completion of the annual grain crop plan, also saw a strong shift to the production of high-value commodities (for animal feed, fresh corn)... Many crop and fish models for the third crop were put into production on a large scale, generating incomes of tens to hundreds of millions of VND/ha.

Based on the experience gained from the limitations in the previous winter crop, this winter crop, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) is focusing on: Applying mechanization to production, introducing genetically modified crops into production in areas with weed and stem borer pressure; expanding the area of corn on double-rice land, developing the area of corn with large biomass to serve dairy and beef cattle farming companies.
This year, the weather forecast is erratic, the drought comes early, so the whole province has about 1,000 hectares of rice land that cannot be planted, now switching to growing corn and peanuts in the winter crop. For example, in Nam Dan district, on some summer-autumn areas that could not be produced due to drought, thanks to some recent rains, farmers have started to produce corn. Some semi-mountainous communes such as: Nam Thuong, Nam Tan, Nam Loc, Nam Hung, Nam Thanh... have completed sowing and planting corn on 150 hectares of drought-affected area.
With the motto of avoiding floods (in fertile land areas), and producing rice as soon as it is harvested, the whole district will enter the main crop production in early September. Mr. Ho Dinh Thang - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture of Nam Dan district said: This winter crop, the district strives to close the area of about 5,700 hectares of cultivation, of which corn accounts for 3,000 hectares, the rest are peanuts and various other crops.
The district focuses on investing in intensive corn cultivation in favorable areas, linking with dairy farms to grow corn to provide feed for cows; at the same time, developing short-term vegetables with high economic value (vegetables in greenhouses in Xuan Hoa, sprouts in Nam Cat, etc.); expanding the area of pumpkin and squash in low-lying areas, increasing the area of autumn-winter peanuts; expanding the area of fish farming in the third crop.
In Nghi Loc district, there are about 2,000 hectares of dry land that cannot produce summer-autumn crops, which have been converted to grow corn and shallots in the winter crop. Discussing the winter crop production plan this year, Mr. Dong Thanh Binh - Deputy Head of the district's Agriculture Department said: "Taking advantage of favorable weather, on some severely drought-affected lands, people have implemented a model of propagating L14 purebred peanuts in the communes of Nghi Trung, Nghi Thach, Nghi Long, Nghi Van.
The area converted to grow chives is concentrated in some communes: Nghi Thuan, Nghi Van, Nghi Kieu. Up to now, the area of chives produced has reached about 30% of the total 200 hectares planned for winter crop production.
This winter crop, Nghi Loc strives to plant over 4,600 hectares, mainly corn (3,300 hectares). Nghi Loc district has a number of cattle farms, so the district plans to plant nearly 700 hectares of red corn (large biomass) to supply corn to these farms. This year, the area of red corn has nearly doubled the area of corn from last winter crop.

The 2016 winter crop is predicted to have extremely complex and unpredictable weather conditions, while the irrigation system in some places has not met the requirements for drainage. On the other hand, the output for winter crop products is unstable. There is a risk that pests and diseases will cause serious damage to crops, especially corn.
Therefore, the provincial Department of Agriculture has proposed specific solutions to improve production efficiency, focusing on the structure of varieties and crop calendar, investing in balanced and reasonable fertilizers; regularly checking for pests and diseases to have timely prevention measures. Implementing irrigation and drainage well.
In the 2016 winter crop, the whole province strives to plant over 40,300 hectares of various crops including: 27,000 hectares of corn, 1,300 hectares of peanuts, 12,000 hectares of various vegetables and beans; 3,200 hectares of fish for the third crop and 5,500 hectares of other crops such as sweet potatoes and industrial crops. In the total plan of 27,000 hectares of winter corn, there are 6,000 hectares of corn on double-rice land and over 5,000 hectares of raw corn for livestock. Strive to complete planting before October 30, 2016. |
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Lap - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, localities need to flexibly implement winter crop production, suitable to their characteristics: Based on the time frame and varieties mentioned in the project, depending on the actual situation and weather developments, localities should consider and calculate to have a suitable planting plan.
Only then can we minimize damage caused by floods, while ensuring high productivity and not affecting spring planting. In particular, for winter crops, localities and people must pay attention to drainage to prevent local flooding, of which the most important concern is peanuts, vegetables and some corn areas on double-rice land. For fish farming in the third rice crop, it is necessary to monitor the flood situation and water levels in the fields to make appropriate adjustments.

This year, in addition to the province's production support policy, some localities have allocated additional budget support for farmers in developing winter crop production, such as: There is a plan to support seed prices for farmers; support 50% of corn seed prices and an additional 30% of corn seed prices for planting on drought-affected land where summer-autumn rice is not grown; at the same time, there is a reward mechanism for communes that complete the district's assigned plan targets; support the construction of VietGAP vegetable models and mushroom growing models... |
