Chinese League 'hangs goat head but sells dog meat', Quang Nam Club 'caught its breath'
In order to recuperate after the long race, Quang Nam leaders have cleverly declined invitations from international tournament organizers. And in fact, up to now, they have been somewhat fortunate in doing so, as the first tournament has shown poor quality.
Before finishing V.League, Quang Nam received invitations to represent Vietnam in two tournaments China - Asean Cities Invitational and Toyota Mekong Club Championship. However, the defending V.League champion refused both tournaments to save energy for bigger goals.
Mr. Nguyen Hup - General Director of the Club said that the main reason for this withdrawal decision was due to the unreasonable arrangement of the competition schedule. The China - Asean Cities Invitational took place from November 29 to December 2, while the Toyota Mekong Club Championship 2017 was scheduled to take place from December 9 to January 6.

It is worth mentioning that Quang Nam just finished their journey to win the V.League title a few days ago. If they participate in the two tournaments above, it is clear that the players' physical strength will not be able to recover in time because next year, in addition to domestic tournaments, Quang Nam will participate in the AFC Champions League.
Another thing that may make Vietnamese teams not interested in the above two tournaments is the quality and organization. Although China - Asean Cities Invitational is advertised as a tournament gathering many top teams, in reality the quality of the teams brought is often very low.
Specifically, the host team representing China this year, Guangzhou Evergrande, with many young or reserve players in the first team, easily lost 0-3 to... the new V.League 2018 Nam Dinh. This shows that the organizing unit itself is not very interested in the tournament. That means Quang Nam was lucky not to go to China to participate in the China - Asean Cities Invitational, wasting both effort and time without gaining anything.
Talking about Toyota Mekong Club Championship, this tournament is increasingly losing value because of its somewhat strange organization. This year, V.League teams have to participate from the preliminary round while Thai League 1 representatives have naturally had a place in the final since the first seasons.
Therefore, Hanoi and SHB Da Nang were not enthusiastic about the tournament since last season. This year, Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN will represent Vietnam in this tournament and their home stadium will be at… Hang Day. This is also a disadvantage for local fans who want to cheer for their home team.
Obviously, there are too many shortcomings in international tournaments with the participation of Vietnamese teams. And for the reigning V.League champion, refusing small opportunities to save energy for bigger goals in the future is also understandable.
