FBI director confirms investigation into Russian 'interference' in election

FBI Director James Comey officially confirmed that an investigation into 'Russian interference in the election' and 'Trump's ties to Russia' is underway.

"The Department of Justice has authorized me to confirm that as part of its counterintelligence mission, the FBI is investigating the Russian government's intelligence efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election process in the United States. This includes investigating any ties between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, as well as examining whether there was any coordination between the campaign and the Russian Federation's influence efforts," Comey said at a hearing in the House Intelligence Committee of the US Congress. However, he refused to provide details.

According to James Comey, the FBI's policy is not to comment on ongoing investigations, but in some cases, if required by national interests, there are still exceptions.

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations by US intelligence agencies that Moscow attempted to influence the US election. Media reports have suggested that representatives of Donald Trump's campaign staff were in "constant contact" with Russian intelligence, but the Kremlin has said this is untrue. The White House has also denied this.
