American professor fired for saying Otto Warmbier deserved to die

A university professor has sparked outrage after saying Otto Warmbier deserved to die after returning from North Korea.

Katherine Dettwyler, a 62-year-old anthropology professor, called Otto Warmbier "a rich, spoiled, stupid, white American student who got exactly what he deserved," after Warmbier died at the age of 22, according to the Daily Caller.

"The University of Delaware would like to announce that Katherine Dettwyler, who was an adjunct professor here in the spring, will not be teaching at the university in the future," school leaders said in a statement on June 25, emphasizing that they do not share Dettwyler's views.

Warmbier was arrested in North Korea in early 2016 after he was accused of stealing a propaganda banner from a hotel in Pyongyang. Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in North Korea. After 17 months, Warmbier was returned to the US in a coma and died on June 19.
