Nghe An teachers and students win Le Van Thiem Prize in Mathematics

(Baonghean.vn) - The Le Van Thiem Award, presented by the Vietnam Mathematical Association, aims to recognize the outstanding achievements of teachers and high school students who have overcome difficulties to teach and learn Math well, and to encourage students to delve into a subject that plays a particularly important role in the long-term development of the country's science.

Le Van Thiem Award is an annual award of the Vietnam Mathematical Society for outstanding teachers and students who have made many contributions to the field of Mathematics in Vietnam.

In 2020, the award was given to 5 individuals, including 2 teachers and 3 students. Nghe An province alone was honored to have 2 individuals receiving this award.

That is teacher Ho Sy Hung (born in 1980), a teacher at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted. This is a fairly young teacher but has achieved many achievements in training excellent students with many students winning prizes at the National Excellent Student Competition. In the past 3 years alone, teacher Hung has had students win prizes at the International Math Olympiad twice, including the Gold Medal of Nguyen Canh Hoang and the Silver Medal of Vu Duc Vinh. In the 2019 - 2020 school year, the Math team led by teacher Hung won 4 First Prizes at the National Excellent Student Competition - a record for Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted and accounting for more than half of the number of First Prizes nationwide.

The second prize was awarded to Vu Duc Vinh, a 12th grader from Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted. Vu Duc Vinh is the first 11th grader from Nghe An province to be selected for the National Team to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad and is also the youngest member of the team. In 2019, Vu Duc Vinh won a Silver Medal at this competition and is currently continuing to review for the selection of the team to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2020.

Professor Le Van Thiem (1918-1991) was the first President of the Vietnam Mathematical Society. He was a famous mathematician who made great contributions to the research and application of Mathematics. He was also one of the founders of university education in our country and a teacher of many generations of Vietnamese mathematicians.
