Giggs: 'Rooney can stay at Man Utd if he accepts new role'

The England striker has received numerous transfer offers this summer, after losing his starting place under Mourinho.

Wayne Rooney has had little playing time since Jose Mourinho took over at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016, despite being captain of Man Utd last season. Therefore, he is considering offers from a number of clubs both in and outside England to find a chance to play regularly next season.

“Rooney is a fantastic goalscorer. Give him a chance and he will score,” Ryan Giggs told Sky Sports.

Giggs believes that Rooney's key problem at Man Utd is that the striker must determine his new position, so that he can have the most positive attitude and contribute to the team.

The Old Trafford legend continued: "It depends now whether he can cope with the fact that he is no longer first choice. Or whether he can continue his career in a similar way to what I did at his age, which is not guaranteed to play every game, but trying to contribute in 25 to 30 games a season."

“Rooney needs to accept the fact that he will play less, but adjust himself to bring out the best in him whenever he gets the chance. If Rooney can do that, then I see him still being able to stick with Man Utd,” Giggs emphasized.

Rooney spent most of last season on the bench, but he still scored when given the chance. In January, he scored his 250th goal for Man Utd, surpassing the legendary Bobby Charlton to become the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

Rooney was no longer Mourinho's first choice last season.

However, it was still a disappointing season for the 31-year-old striker, scoring just five goals and making just 15 Premier League starts.

Teams interested in Rooney recently include his old club Everton and some representatives from the Chinese Super League.

Meanwhile, coach Mourinho is said to be determined to bring 24-year-old striker Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid to Old Trafford to lead Man Utd's attack next season./.
