Wood and garbage "force" the upstream of Nam Non River

(Baonghean.vn) - The 2018 flood has passed almost a year ago, but the consequences are still evident in the upper reaches of the Nam Non River. Wood and garbage have been piling up on the river for months, affecting the lives and livelihoods of many local households.

After the flood in 2018, wood and trash accumulated on the Nam Non River, stretching from My Ly Commune (Ky Son) to Ban Ve (Tuong Duong). Although Ban Ve Hydropower Company hired salvage machines, at some points, the trash still accumulated on the river. According to the My Ly Commune government, after each flood season, the water receded and the hydropower plant blocked the flow, so wood and trash accumulated all over the river.

In the Hoa Ly village area (My Ly commune), where dozens of households build fishing rafts, wood waste is everywhere. "The most waste is in the river sections with weak currents. We still collect it every day to dry it for firewood, but it's not all gone," said Mr. Vi Van Thang, a fisherman on the Nam Non River.
Not only the riverbed, both banks are also filled with rubbish.
Large logs of wood float on the river. These are mostly miscellaneous and easily rotten wood so people do not take them home.
Boats passing through these sections of the river are also very difficult due to the wood and rubbish. They have to find ways to avoid these obstacles to ensure safety.
Logs lying on the slopes can fall into the river at any time during heavy rains, endangering people living on rafts.

After a period of time in the rain and sun, many pieces of wood began to decompose, emitting a foul smell, polluting the water source. Mr. Luong Van Bay - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of My Ly commune said: "These types of wood and garbage have not been completely salvaged, so they are still lying on the river. It is the dry season so they cannot float away. We have to wait until the next flood season to make the river clean again. We have also mobilized fishermen on the river to try to salvage them to help boats move around, but we cannot salvage them all."
