Nadal defeats Wawrinka to win the Madrid Open.
Rafael Nadal brilliantly won the 2013 Madrid Open after a quick 6-2, 6-4 victory over Stanislas Wawrinka in the final.
This is the third Madrid Open title in the career of the "king of clay." Previously, the Spanish player also won the title in 2005 and 2010.
With his victory at the 2013 Madrid Open, Rafael Nadal also set a new world record in men's tennis – 23 Masters 1000 titles (second only to Grand Slam titles) and his 53rd ATP title of his career.
Thus, since returning from injury, Nadal has won a total of 5 titles in the 7 finals he has participated in. Nadal's five titles include the Sao Paulo (Brazil), Acapulco (Mexico), Indian Wells Masters, Barcelona Open, and now the Madrid Open.

However, against Rafael Nadal – who had previously won all eight of their previous encounters – the Swiss player seemed too small and easier to defeat than ever before.
Right in the first game, Wawrinka lost his serve, allowing Rafael Nadal to build a significant 4-0 advantage before finishing the first set with a 6-2 lead.
In the second set, Stanislas Wawrinka put in a much stronger effort, creating a fairly balanced match with Rafael Nadal for eight games. However, those efforts could not help the Swiss player in his encounters with the "king of clay."
With the score at 4-4, Stanislas Wawrinka once again lost a crucial break point to Nadal. Serving, Nadal made no mistake to finish the second set 6-4, securing a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Thus, after 9 encounters, Rafael Nadal has won all 9 matches and has not lost a single set against Stanislas Wawrinka.
"This victory is truly special to me since returning to competition," Nadal expressed to fans in a television interview.
"Playing in Madrid has always been a great feeling for me. I did everything I could to achieve the best results."
This victory will undoubtedly be a huge boost for Nadal before heading into the Rome Masters – a tournament where he will be in the same bracket as world number one Novak Djokovic.
Earlier, in the women's singles final, Serena Williams once again inflicted a painful defeat on Maria Sharapova, winning 6-1, 6-4 to successfully defend her Madrid Open title and maintain her top ranking in the WTA rankings.
