In the 3rd minute, Keita Endo had a clumsy situation right near the penalty area and Van Toan intercepted it before passing it to Quang Hai to shoot past goalkeeper Obi Obinna, opening the score for Olympic Vietnam.
Quang Hai's goal helped Olympic Vietnam play confidently and defend and counterattack very effectively. However, Van Quyet, Van Toan and Quang Hai could not take advantage of the opportunities they had.
At the end of the first half, Olympic Japan actively increased the tempo of the match in search of an equalizer. However, Olympic Vietnam's defense played very focused and solidly.
In the second half, the Japanese Olympic team continued to increase the pressure on goalkeeper Tien Dung's goal. Despite being at a disadvantage, Coach Park Hang-seo's players still maintained their solidity. That helped them secure a minimal 1-0 victory.
With this result, Olympic Vietnam took the top spot in Group D when winning all 3 matches, having 9 points, scoring 6 goals and not conceding any. This is the best achievement in the history of Vietnamese football when participating in the group stages of men's football at the ASIAD. Meanwhile, with this loss, Olympic Japan ranked 2nd with 6 points.
