Real Madrid 2-0 San Lorenzo: On top of the world
Early this morning, Real Madrid easily defeated San Lorenzo 2-0 at Marrakech Stadium (Morocco) to add the World Cup trophy to their collection of titles this year, which already includes the Champions League, European Super Cup and Spanish King's Cup.
Sergio Ramos opened the scoring for the European champions in the 37th minute, before Gareth Bale doubled the lead in the 51st minute. The goal in this match was also Bale's third in major finals, having previously scored in the Champions League final and the Copa del Rey final.
This victory concludes a memorable year for Carlo Ancelotti and his team, especially as their impressive winning streak that started in mid-September shows no signs of stopping.
The Spanish representative could have had the opening goal in the first minute if Karim Benzema could have touched the ball in time after Cristiano Ronaldo's difficult cross.
In the following minutes, San Lorenzo chose a physical style of play in the hope of making things difficult for their opponents. But coach Edgardo Bauza's calculations were ineffective, because Real was simply too strong for the Copa Libertadores champions.
Ronaldo had a few missed free kicks, but the "Vultures" ultimately did not need the Portuguese superstar to open the scoring.
From Bale's tight-angle shot that goalkeeper Sebastian Torrico had to work hard to block, Real was awarded a corner kick. In this situation, Ramos, in an unmarked position, flew to receive Toni Kroos' cross and headed the ball into the net of the South American representative.
Ramos headed the opening goal for Real
In the second half, it didn't take long for Real to double their lead. A sharp combination ended with Isco passing directly to Bale in the box, and although the Welshman's shot was quite soft and not too dangerous, Torrico still let the ball slip past him and into the net.
In the remaining time, Real continued to have more scoring opportunities, but even Ronaldo could not take advantage and had a rare "goalless" day.
San Lorenzo also had a chance to score 1 goal in the final minutes, but Juan Mercier's good long-range shot could not beat Iker Casillas.
In the third-place match that took place earlier, New Zealand representative Auckland City won by defeating Mexico's Cruz Azul after a penalty shootout.
