The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2020 that would prohibit President Donald Trump from launching military operations against Iran without congressional approval. The bill received 251 votes in favor and 170 against, with many Republicans also expressing support for the amendment. However, the bill still needs to be reconciled with the version of the NDAA passed by the Republican-controlled Senate before it can be sent to President Donald Trump to sign into law.

The news comes as many US lawmakers reject the proposal to use military force against Iran, while some Trump administration officials have signaled that they are ready to use the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) to bypass Congress.

Iran's Defense Minister Amir Hatami said Tehran would respond strongly to any violation of its sovereignty by Israel. Hatami's warning came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened that all targets in Iran's territory were within range of the F-35 fighter jets that the country's air force possesses.

Mr. Hatami described Prime Minister Netanyahu's statement as "shameful" and said that Israel's provocation violated UN regulations. Therefore, Iran has the right to respond proportionately to any offensive move on the basis of international law.

On July 12, British police announced that they had launched a "criminal investigation" into the leak of diplomatic cables from the British Embassy in the United States, which included content that downplayed the capabilities of US President Donald Trump. This information leak led to the resignation of British Ambassador to the United States Kim Darroch.

The Metropolitan Police said its counter-terrorism unit, which investigates breaches of the Official Secrets Act, had opened an investigation into the leak of diplomatic cables and briefing notes sent by Ambassador Kim Darroch in 2017. The head of the counter-terrorism unit, Neil Basu, stressed that the incident had damaged Britain's international relations and that those behind the incident must be held accountable. He said the leak had signs of a criminal offence and called on the perpetrators to confess quickly.
