On July 16, the Japanese House of Representatives passed controversial security bills despite opposition from lawmakers and protests by tens of thousands of people in Tokyo.

According to AFP, opposition lawmakers marched en masse out of the Lower House chamber to protest security bills proposed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. With the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) holding a majority, the Lower House passed the bills.

"The security situation surrounding Japan is becoming increasingly serious. These bills are necessary to protect the Japanese people and prevent the risk of war," Prime Minister Abe declared after the vote.

The bills will soon be sent to the Upper House. Prime Minister Abe's ruling coalition also holds a majority in the Upper House.

Some observers suggest that the opposition may try to block or amend the bills. However, the Lower House has the power to reject changes with a two-thirds majority. This is a matter entirely within Abe's control.

Yesterday, as many as 70,000 Japanese people protested outside the Parliament building against the security bills. Many protesters clashed with police. At least two people over 60 years old were arrested for assaulting police officers.

The protesters argued that changes to security policy, expanding the military's operational powers, including the right to assist allied countries in the event of war, could drag Japan into conflicts around the world.

However, supporters argue that these changes are necessary given the volatile security situation in Asia, where North Korea continues to pursue its controversial nuclear and missile programs, while China is becoming increasingly assertive in the South China Sea and East China Sea.
