Ha Viet Dung shared that he was born in Tan Lac district, a poor rural area in Hoa Binh province. At that time, because his family was quite poor, from a young age he knew how to do odd jobs to help his parents, burning lime in kilns to earn money to buy books and school supplies.

"During the summer months, my whole family had to go clamming to sell, a basket of clams only costing around 15,000 - 20,000 dong. My family didn't own any rice paddies, so we had to ration rice for each meal. At one point, my mother had to borrow 70,000 dong to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year). I felt life was truly hopeless, so after finishing high school, I decided not to continue my studies but to go to work. But after a while, I received my conscription notice and served for two years. After being discharged, I stayed home for a while but had nothing to do, so I decided to move south to find opportunities. When I left, I was determined to find a place where I could escape my difficulties," the actor shared.

Traveling alone by bus to the South, Ha Viet Dung said he started earning a living by typing drafts in Dong Thap. Later, the actor moved to Ho Chi Minh City to find work, choosing places that provided food and accommodation to avoid paying rent. He once worked at a wedding reception restaurant, earning 1.4 million VND per month. According to the actor, his life has gone through many turning points. While working as a waiter at the restaurant, Ha Viet Dung was introduced to modeling classes and subsequently became involved in the modeling profession. This opportunity led to increased recognition and gradually gave him chances to participate in films.

Besides his successful career, Ha Viet Dung is also admired for his happy married life with his beautiful wife, Ha Thi Nhung, who is of the Thai ethnic group. The couple married in 2018 and have a 5-year-old daughter. Sharing about how they got married after only two months of knowing each other, Ha Viet Dung's wife said: "I met Dung through a mutual friend in the village. Initially, we didn't talk much, and there was a period of interruption. Coincidentally, I watched a program about Dung and his family and was so moved. I took the initiative to message him and we started talking more. Dung is of the Muong ethnic group, and I am of the Thai ethnic group. When we decided to introduce each other to our families, we felt that was the most suitable day for the wedding. So, we quickly prepared for the wedding."

After getting married, Ha Viet Dung and his wife initially started their careers in Da Nang. The actor admitted that they faced many difficulties in the beginning because both lacked business experience.
