In late 2015, Tu went online to research spyware. This software monitors computer screen activity and steals data, a method commonly used by hackers.
The software is secretly and automatically installed on the user's computer. When running, malicious actors can steal passwords to access personal accounts, credit card numbers, private information, and more.
After learning how to use it, the young man from Quang Tri province created a Facebook account named "Vu Thanh Dat" and then posted on forums offering a software program for making money online.
Immediately, a young man in Hanoi contacted Tu to discuss the software. He sent the victim a link to download a fake application that contained a file with malware.
After waiting for the spyware to run automatically on the computer, Tu stole the victim's email account that was registered for monetization through advertising services.
Knowing that the stolen account had already received a payment of $1,415 via international money transfer, Tu changed the beneficiary to embezzle the money.
After receiving the case, the Triệu Phong District Police (Quảng Trị Province) initiated criminal proceedings against Lê Thiên Tứ for the aforementioned crime.
