Of the two defendants, Lang Thanh Luan has been to prison twice for drug use. Specifically, in 2005, Luan was sentenced to 2 years in prison for illegal drug trafficking. 3 years later, Luan was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the same crime.
According to the case file, on the afternoon of November 10, 2021, when Luan was at home, a man (unknown background and address) came to see him and offered to deliver a heroin cake to the hospital gate in Hanoi for 5 million VND. Luan agreed, so he received the heroin and kept it on his daughter's bedside pillow.
Then, Luan called his niece Ha Thi My Duyen and told her to come to his house. There, Luan learned that Duyen planned to go to Phu Tho to visit her mother, so he discussed transporting drugs to Hanoi and agreed to split the wages.
Duyen agreed and put the heroin in the trunk of her motorbike to go home. Early the next morning, Duyen took her daughter's two diapers, wrapped the heroin in them, put them in her bag with her clothes, and took her daughter to catch a bus to Hanoi.
When the car reached the Truong Banh intersection, Tien Phong commune, Que Phong district, the Que Phong district police working group and the functional forces caught Duyen red-handed with the evidence. On the same day, Que Phong district police issued an emergency arrest warrant for Lang Thanh Luan.
At the trial, the defendants admitted their crimes. Both defendants justified their crimes by citing ignorance of the law and difficult circumstances.
After considering the role of each defendant in the case, the panel sentenced defendant Lang Thanh Luan to 20 years in prison and Ha Thi My Duyen to 19 years in prison for the crime of Illegally transporting narcotics.
