On the morning of May 2, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Qui, Department of Infectious Diseases, Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City, said that this unit had just provided emergency care to two children who suffered from drug shock due to taking the wrong medicine while playing a doctor-patient game.

On April 25, Children's Hospital 2 received two patients, Hoang KA and Phan D.K (both 4 years old, residing in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) in critical condition due to drug shock.

According to the patient's family, while playing doctor-patient, the two children shared 5-6 pills containing Diacerhein 50mg (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, indicated in the treatment of inflammation and osteoarthritis) to take.

Upon admission, the doctors quickly washed the patient's stomach and gave him activated charcoal to absorb the drug out.

After 13 hours of emergency care, the children are out of danger and are being monitored at the hospital.

Doctors say that poisoning and drug shock due to mistakenly taking Western medicine in children are very common. When children take the wrong medicine, parents need to stay calm, avoid panic, and find out what medicine the child took by mistake and the dosage.

After that, the family needs to find a way to hook the child's throat to make the child vomit out part of the medicine to prevent the absorption process; at the same time, give the child plenty of warm water to clean the stomach, detoxify the body, and reduce the harmful effects of the medicine.

In case of coma or convulsions, do not induce vomiting; after initial first aid, quickly take the child to the hospital for further emergency treatment and detoxification.

When taking your child to the hospital, you should bring the medicine packaging that your child took by mistake so that the doctors can handle it promptly and accurately.

To avoid children taking the wrong medicine, parents need to keep medicine high and out of reach of children; securely close all medicines, and throw away unused or expired medicines./.
