(Baonghean.vn) - Despite difficult family conditions and special personal circumstances, the students still strive to overcome difficulties to study well and achieve encouraging results in the 2019 National High School Exam.

From an accident that required amputation to becoming valedictorian of the village school

At Nguyen Huu Sang's house in Hamlet 9, Vien Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh District, the two-room house in the middle of the village is cluttered with unfinished rice winnowing machines. Mr. Nguyen Huu Quy - Sang's father said that after the work accident in 2015 that injured both him and his son, he quit his job as a stone quarryer and switched to hairdressing, then trading in rice bins and now making rice winnowing machines from steel.

That year, while in 9th grade, Sang followed his father to the mountain to mine stones at Ngang cave. While the father and son were prying stones, a large rock collapsed, injuring both father and son. Mr. Quy had his 2 middle fingers on his left hand crushed by the rock, and later had to have them amputated. Sang was more seriously injured, the fingers of his left hand were almost completely crushed, and after a period of treatment, he became severely infected and had to have his entire hand amputated. From a healthy boy, Sang became disabled. That year, he had to take a month off school to treat his injuries.

After cutting his hand, Sang not only suffered physical injuries but also suffered mental shock. All personal activities from playing, hygiene to studying became more difficult. However, with the encouragement and help of relatives, teachers and friends, Sang soon regained his spirit and tried to study. Ms. Nguyen Thi Kieu - Sang's mother said: "I always encourage my child to try to study hard to get an education, so that he will have less hardship in the future."

From grade 1 to grade 12, Sang was an excellent student every year. During middle school, Sang was continuously a district-level excellent student in Math and Physics. After the work accident, despite losing a hand, in grade 9 he still won second prize in the district's excellent student competition in Physics. In high school, grade 11, Sang won third prize in the provincial excellent student competition in Physics.

Notably, in the recent National High School Exam, Sang's admission score for block A was 26.25 points (Math 9, Physics 8.5, Chemistry 8.75). With this score, Sang is not only the student with the highest admission score for block A in the class, but also the valedictorian of block A at Nam Yen Thanh High School.

“Sang is a gentle, quiet student, but has the determination to overcome difficulties and improve his family and personal circumstances. Sang not only studies well but is also active in helping his classmates review for exams. The score Sang achieved in the recent exam accurately reflects his academic results.”

Although he only has one arm, Sang still tries his best in all his work and studies.

Talking about his study methods, Sang modestly said: “I study normally, at school I listen attentively to the teachers, at home I collect more documents to expand my knowledge, especially looking for exam questions to practice how to do the test. My special feature is that I have never taken extra classes.”

It is known that Sang is the second child in a family of 3 siblings, his older brother is in his 2nd year at Army Officer School 1. Sang's dream is to study information technology and has registered for this faculty at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Orphaned boy and his dream of becoming a soldier

Unlike Sang's situation, Tran Quoc Huy, a 12th grade student at T4, Do Luong 1 High School, is an orphan.

When Huy was in middle school, Mrs. Phan Thi Ha - Huy's mother fell ill with cancer. In the "house of love", Huy was alone, taking care of his mother and studying. Born into a family with special circumstances, the mother was also the father, Huy felt even more sorry for his mother. After several years of treatment, the terrible disease took away Huy's beloved mother when he was in 11th grade.

Since his mother passed away, Huy has lived alone in a deserted house in the middle of Hamlet 9, Da Son Commune (Do Luong). Holding back his grief, especially listening to his mother's advice, "Try to study hard to change your life in the future," Huy has worked hard every day. Without his mother, Huy has had to take care of everything himself, from spending money to work and study.

Every day, Huy has to go to the market, cook, and then go to school. On busy review days, Huy often stops by his siblings' houses to have a quick meal. Sympathizing with his situation, the school exempted him from all tuition fees and gave him an electric bike to go to school. Thanks to the care and support of his siblings, the school, and neighbors, Huy was able to complete high school.

Mr. Phan Chinh Xuan (68 years old) - Huy's uncle said in tears, "When Huy's mother was alive, the family's circumstances were already difficult. Now that his mother has passed away, in addition to material difficulties, they also lack emotional and spiritual needs. Many times I feel sorry for him but I can't help him. Luckily, he is diligent and studies well."

Since his mother passed away, Huy has had to take care of everything himself.

Overcoming his circumstances, from grade 1 to grade 9, Huy has always been an excellent student. During his 3 years of high school, Huy achieved the title of excellent student. In the 2019 National High School Exam, Huy's admission score for block A was 23.7 points, including 8.2 in Math, 7.5 in Physics, and 8 in Chemistry. With this score, Huy is the student with the highest score in grade 12 T4.

“I was also quite surprised with this score, because after failing the preliminary round due to not being tall enough to enter the military school, I only thought about studying to pass the graduation exam, then go to vocational school. I registered for the Maritime School just for fun. My dream is to study at a military school, because my circumstances cannot afford to study at a foreign school.”

“Huy is a good, hard-working, and resilient student. Knowing his situation, over the years, the class and school have given him a lot of support, encouragement, and help. With Huy's situation, his exam scores are a great effort. Hopefully, with the help of the community, Huy will continue to go to school."

In recent days, both Huy and Sang have been awarded full scholarships and other incentives by a private university in Hanoi, but whether or not they will attend school is still up to them to decide.
