South Korea puts military on rapid response alert

South Korea's Defense Ministry said today (September 25) it is putting its military on alert, following allegations that North Korea shot dead a South Korean official.

The statement from the South Korean military came after South Korea confirmedChosenSouth Korean authorities shot dead an official from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries after identifying him in North Korean waters. The 47-year-old official went missing while on duty on a patrol boat in waters off the western island, according to South Korea.

South Korea has yet to explain why the man was in North Korean waters, but Yonhap news agency cited an unnamed intelligence source as saying he was trying to defect to North Korea.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in yesterday (September 24) called on North Korea to take "responsible" measures regarding the incident. However, as of this morning, North Korea and its media agencies have not made any mention of the incident./.
