South Korea passes resolution condemning North Korea's nuclear weapons

The resolution was adopted nearly two weeks after Pyongyang conducted its fifth nuclear test despite strong opposition and warnings from the international community.

“We have firmly warned the DPRK that reckless provocations will only further isolate it from the international community, and Pyongyang will face more pressure.”

“Pyongyang must take further concrete steps to abandon its nuclear programs,” the new resolution reads.

South Korean lawmakers also called on the government to come up with countermeasures against North Korea's development of submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), as well as weapons of mass destruction.

“Congress supports the efforts of the government and the international community to counter North Korea's nuclear weapons,” the resolution said.

The National Defense Commission and the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee of South Korea submitted separate resolutions to the National Assembly on September 9, shortly after the Democratic People's Republic of Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test. The resolutions were later merged.
