South Korea: North Korea possesses 20-60 nuclear weapons
South Korea's Unification Minister has publicly released figures for the first time on the size of its neighbor's nuclear arsenal, with estimates estimating that North Korea possesses between 20 and 60 nuclear weapons.
South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon told the country's parliament that North Korea is estimated to possess between 20 and 60 nuclear weapons.
This is the first time Seoul has publicly released figures on the size of its neighbor's nuclear arsenal.
Mr. Cho revealed this when answering a question from a Korean lawmaker and said that this information was provided by the intelligence agency.
South Korea's assessment of North Korea's nuclear arsenal does not differ much from estimates by outside civilian organizations based on the amount of nuclear material North Korea is believed to have produced.
South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon on October 3 called for the international community's support for efforts to bring lasting peace and co-prosperity on the Korean Peninsula as the country celebrated its National Day.
The Moon Jae-in administration is "closing the curtain on the world's last Cold War" by holding three summits with North Korea this year alone, he said.
He described the initiative as a “bold journey” toward complete denuclearization of North Korea, lasting peace and shared prosperity.
Speaking at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul, the South Korean Prime Minister said: "North Korea also committed itself to abandoning nuclear weapons and pursuing peace and prosperity, not isolation and poverty anymore"./.
