South Korea and the US agree on the location of THAAD missiles

(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of July 13, South Korea and the United States officially selected Seongju town, North Gyeongsang province, South Korea as the location to deploy the high-tech ballistic missile defense system (THAAD) to counter the threat from North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

A representative from the South Korean side said that the Defense Ministers of the two countries had previously proposed and agreed to deploy the THAAD missile defense system in Seongju.

The deployment of the THAAD defense system in Seongju, 296 km southeast of Seoul, will ensure the safety of two-thirds of South Korea's territory, in the context of key state agencies such as nuclear power plants and oil refineries, along with the South Korean-US alliance forces, which are increasing significantly," the South Korean Defense Ministry said.

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense also said that the selection of the location for the THAAD defense system was based on military effectiveness and public safety. After conducting research, comparison, field testing and simulation, the Ministry made the final choice of Seongju town.

The decision to select the deployment location was made after the Korea-US Alliance announced the earliest time to deploy the defense shield in Korea is the end of 2017.
