In a statement, the ministry said North Korea's missile launch was a serious provocation that threatened peace on the Korean Peninsula and the world, ignoring new UN Security Council sanctions resolutions against Pyongyang over its nuclear test in January and long-range ballistic missile launch in February.

The ministry stressed that South Korea will promptly push for necessary measures at the Security Council, coordinate with the international community and make every effort to pressure North Korea to abandon its nuclear and missile programs.

The statement said Seoul will firmly deal with any provocations by Pyongyang and maintain a state of defense readiness.

According to the South Korean Ministry of National Defense, at 5:55 a.m. local time (3:55 a.m. Vietnam time on March 18), North Korea launched at least one medium-range ballistic missile from the Sukchon area in southwestern North Korea. The missile flew about 800 km and fell into the sea off the east coast of North Korea.

Seoul also suspects Pyongyang launched a second missile shortly afterwards./.
