Wayne Rooney had a sad day returning to Old Trafford when he witnessed his old team crush Everton 4-0.

Man Utd have returned to the top of the Premier League despite having to share the title with their neighbours Man City. The two Manchester teams have 13 points, scored 16 goals and conceded two after the first five rounds. This is a success for the Red Devils because before the match, not many people believed Man Utd could beat Everton by four goals even when the visitors were on a poor run of form.

Man City's 6-0 win over Watford on Saturday put the pressure on Man Utd, but they were soon relieved with a fourth-minute goal from Antonio Valencia. The right-back scored a superb goal before the Old Trafford crowd were ready to warm up, volleying home from 20 yards after a deflected pass from Matic.

The early goal helped Man Utd to have an easy game in the first half but the chances kept slipping past Lukaku, including a situation where the Belgian player shot wide of the goal after dribbling past a defender and facing goalkeeper Pickford.

The second half started with a great chance for Rooney but goalkeeper De Gea's leg prevented the former captain from scoring against Man Utd. Everton then had another chance to face Gylfi Sigurdsson but this midfielder finished with a shot and still could not beat De Gea.

Everton had lost three consecutive games before that, failing to score a goal and conceding eight. Ronald Koeman's team played a disjointed game with new players who had no time to get to know each other. In addition to the deadlocked attack, Everton's defense with three central defenders was not solid enough and often looked confused when put under pressure.

If Michael Keane had a bad pass in the first half and Lukaku could not take advantage, Everton were not lucky twice. Right after Rooney was substituted, the former Man Utd captain had to watch Ashley Williams make a bad pass at home and then Lukaku assisted Mkhitaryan to make it 2-0.

Everton's defense continued to show its sloppiness when Lukaku freely sneaked down to receive the ball and finished close to the goal. This was the 24-year-old striker's fifth goal in the Premier League for Man Utd. What was special was that Lukaku scored against the team that he had been with for the past four years and raised this player to the top of the foggy country.

In the extra minutes, Morgan Schneiderlin helped his former team with a handball in Everton's 16m50 box. On the 11m mark, Anthony Martial did not miss the opportunity to score the final goal to make it 4-0 after coming off the bench.
