Indian citizens evacuate due to fears of riots.
Officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, said the state's railway authority has had to increase the number of trains to Assam and West Bengal to meet the surge in travel demand. Bangalore Railways said as many as 6,000 tickets were sold on the evening of August 15 alone.
People who had traveled to the city of Guwahati in Assam state also said they had decided to leave at the last minute out of fear of being attacked.
Bangalore police are currently investigating the source of the rumors, which were spread via SMS on mobile phones, email, and social media, as well as the individuals responsible for spreading them. Bangalore has a population of approximately 9 million people.
The rumors emerged after clashes between Bodo tribesmen and Muslims in Assam entered their third week, leaving 80 people dead, more than 400,000 displaced, and around 5,300 homes destroyed.
According to local sources, clashes continued on August 16th when a group of gunmen vandalized buses and cars and set fire to a wooden bridge in the Nalbari and Kamrup districts. Meanwhile, an acid attack in the town of Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district injured 11 people.
