Passengers panicked because of being closely followed by fighter jets.

Passengers on a flight from Spain to Birmingham, England, by budget airline Jet2 recently recounted how their plane was shadowed by a French fighter jet for 15 minutes, DailyMail reported.

Passenger Sarah Hatfield, who discovered the unusual phenomenon while returning to the UK from Malaga with her husband Ian and 13-year-old daughter Emily, said she felt she could read what was written on the tail of the accompanying plane.

"Someone spotted the French fighter and told the crew. Then the flight attendants said there was nothing to worry about. But Ian was very frightened," said Sara Hatfield. Sara said her daughter took some photos of the French fighter.

The female bank employee added: "At that time, the feeling of everyone on the plane was a mixture of excitement because we saw a fighter jet flying close and panic because the plane we were on could be shot down."

Budget airline Jet2 is awaiting confirmation from French aviation authorities as to why flight LS1204 appeared to be closely escorted by the French air force on the afternoon of 18 August.
