Happy to see the smile of sick children
As a place to receive and care for children under 30 days old, the Neonatal Department, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital plays an important role in the early life journey of babies who need special medical care. Understanding that, in more than 20 years of working here, Ms. Le Thi Ly (born in 1980) - Head Nurse of the Neonatal Department has always been dedicated to her work. For her, the greatest reward is seeing the smiles of mothers and children when the little angels recover and become healthy.
Dedicated, calm
Early in the morning, inside the Neonatal Department of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the atmosphere was quiet, everyone was as gentle as possible so as not to disturb the fragile sleep of the babies. But in the hallway, the atmosphere gradually became more bustling, the tension seemed to be pushed up with the urgent questions: "Doctor, is my baby progressing well?", "When will my baby be able to breastfeed normally again?", "Does the incubator need to be covered with a blanket?"...

In the face of such concerns, nurse Ly remained calm, checking each child's condition step by step, guiding the nurses through the care procedures and gently reassuring the patient's family. It was this caring attitude that helped many families feel more secure in their journey of accompanying their children through difficult days.
In the Kangaroo room, place to care for premature and low birth weight babies, Mr. Hoang Van Tuan (born in 1984, residing in Nam Dan district) is patiently letting his baby lie skin-to-skin on his chest in the hope that his baby will get better according to the treatment plan. Looking at his small, red baby, he cannot hide his anxiety.

Mr. Tuan said that this time his wife gave birth to twins, so since the birth of the children, he was assigned by his wife to "take charge" of one child. Although this was not his first time being a father, the fact that his child was born underweight still made him uneasy and sometimes clumsy. However, with the dedicated guidance of Ms. Le Thi Ly, he gradually got used to taking care of the baby using the Kangaroo method - a method that helps stabilize breathing, strengthen the bond between parents and children, support brain development and reduce the risk of neonatal infections.
After a few hours of stress, Ms. Ly said that she was born and raised in Nghia Dan. In 2001, she graduated from the Nursing Department - Vinh Medical University and started working at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. Initially, she worked in the Surgery Department, then transferred to the Emergency Resuscitation Department. In 2005, the Neonatal Department was established and she has been working with the department until now.

Department of NeonatologyThere are currently 10 patient rooms, including an emergency room, a kangaroo room, a phototherapy room, a pneumonia room, an infection room...
In 2024, the Department received and treated more than 4,000 pediatric patients. This means that each medical staff member has to take on a large workload, from caring for and monitoring the health of pediatric patients to performing specialized techniques.
In that work cycle, the role of the head nurse becomes even more important as she not only directly participates in caring for sick children but is also responsible for coordinating work, providing professional guidance, and ensuring the care process takes place accurately and effectively.

Over the years, Bachelor of Nursing Le Thi Ly has always shown meticulousness, thoughtfulness and initiative in caring for children as well as performing assigned tasks. In particular, since being appointed as a nurse in the department in 2014, she has not only performed her role well but also actively guided her colleagues to perform new technical procedures accurately and effectively.
Thanks to those efforts, she has been awarded the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level for 9 consecutive years, and in 2012 won First Prize in the Excellent Nursing Competition organized by the hospital. In 2020 and 2022, she guided nurses in the department with knowledge, skills, and experience to participate in the competition and also won the highest awards. This demonstrates her solid expertise and dedication to her profession.
BSCKII Doan Thi Thanh Binh - Head of Neonatology Department
A good doctor is like a good mother.
Not only is she dedicated to her profession, Ms. Ly is also a strong spiritual support for many families in need. There are children born into difficult circumstances, poor parents, and some even consider taking their children home because they do not have enough money for treatment. Every time this happens, she struggles to find a way to call for help.
One of the cases she could not forget was the patient HBL in Muong Tip commune, Ky Son district. Because the patient's family was too poor and did not have enough money to pay the hospital fees, relatives were forced to decide to take the child home. Upon receiving the information, Ms. Ly immediately reported to the department's leaders, then together with her colleagues, mobilized and called for help from many sides. Thanks to that timely support, the patient's family had more spiritual and material support to complete the treatment process until the child recovered healthily.

Not long before, the Neonatal Department also successfully saved a premature baby with respiratory failure and severe neonatal infection. This was a special case of a premature baby born at 32 weeks, weighing only 1.1 kg, belonging to a family living in Thach Ha district, Ha Tinh. After 27 days of treatment, under the care of doctors in the department and nurse Le Thi Ly, the baby weighed 1.9 kg. The baby breathed on its own, had a suckling reflex and was able to eat breast milk.
After the baby recovered, knowing the family's situation was extremely difficult when the baby's father was born deaf and mute, and Ms. D. - the baby's mother was pregnant and had Type 2 diabetes and had been hospitalized twice for treatment. Ms. Le Thi Ly and everyone in the Neonatal Department and other departments and rooms of the hospital stood up to donate and call for help so that the patient's family could have more support to overcome difficulties.

These stories are indeed not uncommon in Ms. Ly's journey to the medical profession. After many efforts, she has received many important awards such as the Commemorative Medal for People's Health from the Minister of Health in 2020; Certificates of Merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee in 2016 and 2019. This year, she is honored to be one of the outstanding individuals to be awarded the title "Excellent Physician in 2025".
For more than two decades dedicated to her job, to the cries and laughter of little angels, nurse Le Thi Ly is still working tirelessly on shifts and sleepless nights. But for her, all those hardships are worth it when she sees a healthy baby return to the loving arms of her family. That is the simple but priceless happiness of a medical professional.
