(Baonghean.vn)- Vinh Citadel Moat is being suffocated by garbage, wastewater and water hyacinth. The project to renovate Vinh Citadel Moat is expected to bring a new look to this most unique relic in Nghe An.
Vinh Citadel was built by the Nguyen Dynasty in 1831, is a rampart architectural work with a perimeter of 2,520 meters. The Citadel includes 3 gates: Front Gate, Left Gate and Right Gate. Located in the cluster of ancient citadel relics surrounded by a moat. |
The moat was dug close to the outside of the citadel to get soil to build ramparts and walls, and at the same time to form an external defense system to increase the difficulty for the enemy when attacking the citadel. The moat was dug 8 meters deep and 70 meters wide. The moat system was connected to Vinh River (Cua Tien River) by a canal 5 meters wide, 4 meters deep, and 3 meters wide at the bottom. |
However, today, the only vestige of the moat is a black ditch of sewage. |
Many sections become garbage collection points for surrounding residential areas. |
Many sections of the moat are covered with water hyacinth. |

This is the widest remaining section of the Moat. |
Over time, the moat has been increasingly narrowed. Houses have sprung up close together, obscuring an ancient historical structure. |
The lives of people on both sides of the moat are suffering the consequences of environmental pollution and polluted wastewater discharged by themselves. |
The Vinh Citadel Project is being implemented and has received great expectations from the people, experts and researchers. After the project is completed, the ancient citadel will be restored to its original green and poetic state and is expected to become a tourist highlight of Vinh Citadel. |
