Post-Brexit will devastate Britain like the “Suez Canal crisis”

(Baonghean.vn) - After the Brexit plan was rejected at the EU Summit in Salzburg, British Prime Minister Theresa May faces new pressure from cabinet members and prominent members of the "backbench".

The “backbench” forced her to abandon the Chequers plan and seek a new, more liberal free trade deal with Brussels.

Brexiteers are pushing for a full break from the EU, a change that cabinet members fear could lead to the country breaking up. Others fear it could spark a debate over Scotland’s status in the UK and, further, its separation from the union.

“Nobody who voted for Brexit wants Britain to break up,” said one British government official. “Those who support (the free trade deal) almost need to face the consequences for the union,” said another.

The deadlock has led senior Tory members to a situation that has been compared to the 1956 Suez crisis, which destroyed Anthony Eden's premiership.

“It’s similar to the Suez crisis. You just don’t know what the unintended consequences will be. The next three weeks could change everything. The Suez crisis has been going on for months and this depends on the turning points in British political history.”

Some Tories are worried that Prime Minister May's Brexit plan will not gain much support and fear a snap election will be needed later this year.

On September 19 and 20, EU-led states and governments gathered for an informal meeting in Salzburg, Austria. During the talks, May presented her Brexit plan to EU leaders, but the two sides failed to reach a consensus.

With less than 200 days left in the post-Brexit transition period, EU leaders have agreed to hold a special summit in November 2018 to finalize a Brexit deal.
