YouTube, one of the world's largest video sharing platforms, is not only a place for entertainment but also a fertile ground for scams. In particular, comments under videos often contain many hidden risks that users need to be extremely wary of.

With YouTube's massive user base, the platform is becoming an ideal target for scammers. They often target unsuspecting viewers through fake comments or suspicious links.

If you're not careful, you could become a victim of those who try to exploit your lack of vigilance, scamming you through rigged games, fake advertisements, or requesting personal information to steal your account or money.

5 common types of YouTube comment scams

While this isn't a comprehensive list, here are some of the most common scams viewers encounter in YouTube's comment section.

These scams often appear under popular videos, exploiting viewers' lack of vigilance to carry out sophisticated tricks, from impersonating famous YouTubers and luring users into fake promotions to sharing malicious links that can steal personal information or spread viruses.

1. Cryptocurrency scams

Cryptocurrency scams are a common problem on YouTube, especially on videos related to cryptocurrencies, investing, or financial topics in general. One reason these scams are so dangerous is that they are often posted by seemingly legitimate accounts, making them difficult for viewers to recognize.

Initially, these scam comments may seem harmless, often starting with the scammer sharing a personal success story or a few investment tips that they claim might help others.

However, these comments often receive a lot of replies, mostly from fake accounts. The responding accounts will claim to have achieved great success in their cryptocurrency investment journey, thanks to the guidance of some "mentor." These names are almost always fake, and the purpose of the initial comments and replies is to create a false impression of the information's credibility.

When someone messages a scam account or replies to these comments, they are often asked to continue the conversation via other social media platforms like Messenger or Zalo to maintain anonymity and continue chatting with the victim, subtly attempting to exploit their information or money.

2. Gift giveaway/prize draw scams

Many companies and YouTubers organize legitimate giveaways and sweepstakes. However, you shouldn't blindly trust all giveaway contests on social media and video-sharing platforms like YouTube.

If you encounter comments from accounts claiming to be running giveaways or sweepstakes related to well-known brands or YouTubers whose videos are involved, it's best to ignore them. Unless you're certain the comment comes from the YouTuber themselves (as their comment will have a verification badge in this case), don't reply or click on any links shared in that comment.

Sometimes, fake accounts use unusual characters to impersonate YouTube's verification badge. So always double-check these characters; if you're unsure, click on the account name to confirm before taking any action.

3. Investment fraud

Investment scams are very similar to cryptocurrency scams, but the difference is that they are designed to appeal to a broader audience. The main goal of these scams is to exploit people's desire for quick money and financial returns.

On YouTube, these fraudulent comments often appear under videos by financial influencers. Because these videos are often very popular and attract many views, the fraudulent comments easily catch the eye of unsuspecting viewers, making them susceptible to scams without realizing the risk.

4. Online scams

Phishing attacks are becoming increasingly common, with cybercriminals using emails containing fake links disguised as legitimate websites, or exploiting platforms like YouTube through comments to scam users.

If you're watching a video about an upcoming new tech gadget and see a seemingly harmless comment suggesting you can pre-order the device or get a discount through a specific link, you might feel tempted to click if you're not vigilant.

However, these links are actually designed to steal your login information or personal data. So always remember to only access official websites to protect your information.

5. Impersonation scams

Have you ever encountered comments where the commenter's name and profile picture suspiciously match the name of a YouTuber or business that runs the channel? This is a form of impersonation scam, where cybercriminals create fake accounts, only slightly altering the original creator's name due to spelling errors.

To enhance their legitimacy, they also use images stolen from popular creators. These fake accounts frequently appear in the video comments section, replying to viewers' comments and instructing them to establish contact outside of YouTube or asking them to click on links to receive prizes—this is just one of many tricks they use to scam people.

How to identify fraudulent comments on YouTube

While scammers are constantly finding new ways to exploit innocent YouTube users, there are still some helpful warning signs to help you identify and avoid fraudulent comments.

1. Check the commenter's profile.

If you suspect a comment might be from a scammer, check their profile. If the account is newly created or the username has spelling errors like "Sơn Tung M-TP" instead of "Sơn Tùng M-TP", that's a clear sign of a scammer.

In particular, if they are impersonating a well-known creator, you will also notice that their profile lacks a verification badge or doesn't have any old videos.

2. Be wary of offers that seem too tempting.

Scamming comments sometimes claim you've won a big prize or offer exclusive, enticing investment tips. However, if a comment promises something too good to be true, you should be extremely wary and avoid interacting with that account.

Legitimate businesses or YouTubers will always contact you through official and transparent channels if you actually win a prize or are eligible for any reward.

3. Analysis of the language used

There are many free online spell and grammar checkers, but scammers rarely bother to use them. Therefore, fraudulent comments are often full of grammatical and spelling errors, which are easy to spot if you pay attention.

Another noticeable point is that scam comments often follow a similar script, and they are frequently copied and pasted across multiple videos. If you see a comment that looks familiar, like one you've encountered in a similar video, it's very likely a sign of a scam account.

What should you do when you discover a fraudulent comment?

With YouTube's widespread popularity, the platform has become fertile ground for fake accounts and scam comments. Therefore, it's no surprise that you might encounter suspicious comments. If you spot such a comment, absolutely do not interact with or reply to it, no matter how tempting the offer or request may seem.

The worrying thing is that while you might recognize a fraudulent comment, many others may not be vigilant enough and unwittingly become victims. This is even more concerning as cybercriminals' tactics become increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect.

Therefore, if you encounter a fraudulent comment, report it to YouTube immediately. You can do this by clicking the three-dot icon to the right of the comment and selecting Report.

Next, select a suitable reason, and YouTube will review the comment to determine and remove it if necessary. Your actions not only protect yourself but also contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone.
