When the fire broke out, gasoline from 6 motorbikes combined with foam mattresses on the ground floor caused 6 victims in the house on Le Van Sy street to suffocate to death.

The identities of the 6 victims include: 1. Tran Anh Thang (47 years old, from Bac Giang, who rented the house to run a coffee shop); 2. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thuy (47 years old, Thang's wife); 3. Tran Ngoc Van Anh (7 years old, Thang's daughter, Thuy's daughter); 4. Tran Ngoc Bao Han (5 years old, Thang's daughter, Thuy's daughter); 5. Tran Ngoc Thien Kim (born in 2016, Thang's daughter, Thuy's daughter); 6. Pham Ngoc Thuy Vy (36 years old, from Dong Nai, Thang's niece).

Lieutenant Colonel Le Manh Hung - Deputy Head of the Fire Police Department of District 3 said that this house runs a small coffee shop, selling coffee on the sidewalk in the morning so it is not subject to fire prevention inspection by the department.

Mr. Nguyen Phung Hung (48 years old) was still tired after a sleepless night. He said that the fire started on the ground floor of the house. At the time of the fire, he smelled a burning smell, then a spark appeared in the corner of the ground floor. Within 3 minutes, the whole house was engulfed in flames.

“The whole neighborhood mobilized dozens of fire extinguishers to rush over, but the fire was so big that even standing 4 meters away it was still blazing hot. People holding fire extinguishers jumped in and sprayed it for a few seconds before having to run outside because the heat was unbearable,” the witness added.

According to Mr. Hung, at that time, on the first floor, there were 4 students renting the house standing and calling for help. People quickly ran home to get a mattress and spread it in the middle of the street. The victims climbed over the balcony and jumped to the ground, luckily escaping death.

“We knew his family was trapped below but there was no way to reach them. The cries for help rang out and then died down. The fire was so big, we were helpless as we watched his family die tragically,” said Nguyen Phung Hung, choking with emotion.

Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Hang, Chief of Office of District 3 People's Committee, said that the locality has organized visits to the injured victims. For the 6 people who died in the fire, the District People's Committee supported 17 million VND/person for the family to take care of the funeral.

Regarding the cause of the fire that killed 6 people, Colonel Doan Van Chon - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Fire Police Department said that because there were 6 motorbikes in the house that caught fire and all the motorbikes contained gasoline, when the fire broke out, a lot of toxic smoke was released, causing suffocation.
