The ALR-69A is a radar intercept system that allows aircraft to detect threats from enemy air defense systems early.

Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) technology is designed to extend the ability of fighter aircraft to identify potential threats in their operating environment. This is an important capability when operating in environments with advanced air defense systems.

Modern air defense systems like Russia's S-300 or S-400 leverage the computing power of high-performance computers, which are networked together to be able to detect aircraft at greater distances, and across a wider range of frequencies.

Not only stealth aircraft but also unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) find it difficult to operate in the combat environment of these modern air defense missile systems.

To counter modern air defense systems, General Atomics Aeronautics (GA-AIS) has tested the RWR system on Predator drones to evaluate the operational capabilities of UAVs in areas adjacent to enemy air defense systems.

The developers say that with various test configurations, the team confirmed that the RWR system's performance reached and exceeded current thresholds for both targeting radars and ground-based air defense radars.

“The demonstration earlier this year in Palmdale, California, demonstrated the benefits of the ALR-69A RWR system in controlling mission aircraft within the early warning area of enemy air defense systems,” Claudio Pereida, deputy project manager for Mission Systems, told reporters.

Additionally, information from the RWR system assists the crew in making action decisions, such as self-checking sensors to confirm threat information.

GA-ASI plans to demonstrate additional RWR systems later this year that include integrating the ALR-69A with the LINK-16 tactical information system, to provide aircrews and controllers with real-time threat information.

“The ALR-69A improves detection range and delivers accurate, unambiguous identification in high-density signal environments,” said Paul Overstreet, ALR-69A program manager, Raytheon.

RWR testing for Predator is currently being researched and developed internally by GA-ASI. The company aims to cooperate with potential customers in the near future, specifically the US Air Force and its allies.
