Laser system kills harmful insects in a flash
Photonic Fence can automatically identify pests and shoot a laser beam to incinerate the animal in 25 milliseconds.
Intellectual Ventures Lab in Seattle, Washington, USA has developed a Photonic Fence device that can identify and destroy harmful insects.EngadgetJune 26 news.
Photonic Fence tCreates a wall of infrared light with a power of about 30W, which can distinguish many types of harmful insects, even between male and female mosquitoes, through their flight.
Camera and optical system help the device detect suspicious animals within 100 meters to determine image parameters.shape, speed, acceleration and frequency of wing beats.
If the animal's parameters match the programmed list of pests, the device automatically fires a laser beam. "Within25 milliseconds, you have the body of the insect on the ground," said Arty Makago, the project's technical lead. Makago said tThe device can kill 20 insects per second within a range of 30 meters wide and 3 meters high.
The USDA has installed the device at a test site. If the trial is successful, American farmers could soon buy the product on the market as an alternative to pesticides.
