This morning (January 18), the fire was still not completely extinguished at the scene of the fire that burned dozens of houses along the Cai River in Nhat Tri Islet, Vinh Phuoc Ward, Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province. People are trying to pick up what is left in the ashes, but there is almost nothing usable left. The terrible fire has left hundreds of people facing a penniless Tet.

The scene of devastation after dozens of houses burned down in Nhat Tri islet. |
At the scene, more than 70 houses were burned down, leaving only concrete piles protruding from the low-lying area of firefighting water. Authorities and soldiers were wading into the waist-deep black water to dig out each sheet of corrugated iron and some charred metal objects...
Mr. Pham Van Nam, a resident living in the burned area, said bitterly: "Everything was burned down, all the machinery and equipment on the offshore fishing boat that was brought up for Tet holiday was burned down, causing hundreds of millions in damage. All personal documents and books were burned by the fire. What a Tet holiday. The road was too narrow, we only had time to escape...".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien cried in the burnt house: "I heard people running, shouting fire, quickly pulled my two children out. As soon as I left the house, I heard a loud explosion behind me, the fire flared up fiercely, smoke covered everywhere, the wind was very strong...".
As for Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, he works as a sailor and lives in the same house with his father-in-law. When the fire broke out, 6 people in his family ran out the door without having time to bring anything with them.
 |
Mr. Tran Van Den said: "I just repaired my house for Tet, took 35 million from selling fish and now it's all gone!" |
Amidst the devastation, some people are trying to pick up some scrap metal to earn money for food. Many people are confused about where to celebrate Tet because their houses have been reduced to ashes.
Voices of grievance rose up in the acrid smoke: "So cruel, last night the wind blew so hard, everything burned down, what a Tet holiday!".
Local authorities are currently counting the damage. So far, the total number of houses burned down is 71.
