The effectiveness of the 3-crop production policy in Cam Son

(Baonghean.vn) - The policy of converting crops from 2 to 3 crops/year by the Party Committee and government of Cam Son commune has helped people's lives improve, contributing greatly to the success of the new rural construction movement in the locality.

Mr. Vuong Dinh Trinh in village 4, Cam Son commune is a pioneer in the movement to change the crop structure, introducing some short-term varieties to grow 3 crops/year. Last spring, he contracted 3 sao of land to grow pumpkin, yielding 2.5 tons, with an average price of 5,000-6,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, his family earned over 10 million VND/crop.

Most households have switched from 2 crops to 3 crops, bringing high economic efficiency, many models have income of over 100 million VND/year.

Mr. Trinh shared: “Pumpkin is a plant that can withstand drought well, grows quickly, and has a short growing period (70-75 days to harvest), so it can be grown in rotation 3 times a year. Moreover, pumpkin can avoid floods, and its good quality fruit is favored by the market. Not only can the fruit be harvested for sale, but the pumpkin tops and flowers are also a significant source of additional income for farmers. With a short growing period, after harvesting pumpkin, his family can grow another crop of summer-autumn corn and another crop of winter vegetables.”

For the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, in village 4, Cam Son commune, previously, on an area of ​​5 sao of alluvial land, they only monocultured 2 corn crops with low efficiency. After receiving training on science and technology transfer, and understanding information on effective crop restructuring, in 2014, she boldly decided to grow vegetables for sale and chose short-term varieties suitable for local soil quality to grow 3 crops/year.

After applying 3 crops, Ms. Hai commented that "watermelon, green eggplant, and squash are short-term crops, with high productivity and good profits". Typically, with watermelon, the investment is about 1-1.5 million VND/sao, after 3 months of care, the harvest is ready, the family only planted 2 sao but the yield reached nearly 2.4 tons of fruit. With a selling price of 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, Ms. Hai still earned a profit of over 14 million VND.

Mr. Hoang Ba Nhi - Secretary of the Cam Son Commune Party Committee said: From the effectiveness of the rotation model of growing 3 crops/year, the Commune Party Committee has directed departments and branches to coordinate and open 6 training sessions on transferring vegetables and other commercial crops for 360 farmers to participate. In 2016, the Commune Party Committee also focused on directing the conversion of 50 hectares from 2 crops to 3 crops, focusing on the model of growing short-term commercial vegetables in the commune. Currently, Cam Son people have completely switched to growing 3 safe crops with the rotation formula: spring squash + summer-autumn corn + winter vegetables or spring cucumber + summer watermelon + winter vegetables, contributing to doubling the income compared to monoculture of one type of crop as before.

The policy of changing the structure of crops and seasons in Cam Son not only contributes to increasing income but also acts as a driving force for economic development, fundamentally changing the old farming practices of high investment, low efficiency, spreading production, and reducing labor force. Currently, the average value of cultivation in Cam Son has reached 80 million VND/ha/year, in which there are fields with income of over 100 million VND/ha/year.
