Everything suddenly becomes a lot easier, because there is only one choice! And visit this bookstore in Japan, you will be very surprised.

Imagine you are standing in a bookstore with rows and rows of books and you have decided to buy only one or two books. However, you cannot decide which one to “leave behind”.

So what if there was a minimalist bookstore with a limited selection of books, where you didn’t have to think twice every time you walked in? You ended up picking up nearly 10 books when you would probably only read about 4 before returning to the store and repeating the cycle. This is certainly not unfamiliar to book fans! If you’re still skeptical, prepare yourself to be surprised, because this bookstore is completely real!

Morioka Shoten – A bookstore that sells only one book at a time

Located in Ginza, one of the busiest shopping districts in Tokyo (Japan), Morioka Shoten is known by many for its unique feature: selling only one type of book per week.

Yoshiyuki Morioka, the owner of this unique idea, decided to open the shop in May 2015. Every week, he selects a certain book and the bookstore will only sell identical versions of this work for the next 6 days.

During the time a book is on display, the theme of the entire bookstore will focus solely on related works of art or objects.

For example, if a book about flowers is on sale, the store will display flowers that appear in the book.

The book on display is about fish, so it's decorated all around with fishing nets!

The author and editor of the book are also encouraged to make maximum in-store appearances during the six days of sale.

All of this, according to Morioka, will give customers the feeling of actually stepping "inside" the book. And so, enjoying the work will be like a three-dimensional experience for the reader.

10 years for a unique initiative!

It is known that this novel idea was born after Morioka owned a traditional bookstore for a decade.

The store has a minimalist style with a limited selection of books, where you don't have to think hard every time you enter.

With about 200 books on sale that day, he realized that buyers were often "confused" with the countless titles. Furthermore, every time he held a book launch event, it attracted a lot of interested people.

chỉ trong 7 tháng đầu tiên số lượng sách bán ra đã lên tới 2.100 cuốn cho các độc giả trên khắp thế giới.
In just 7 months of opening the store, the number of books sold reached 2,100 copies to readers around the world.

This made him wonder if people liked focusing on one work like that, why not open a store that only "promoted" one book. And so Morioka Shoten was born!

And it seems that this idea was quite successful, because in just the first 7 months, the number of books sold reached 2,100 copies to readers around the world.

However, Morioka is by no means the first person in the world to implement this book-selling model. The father of this idea must be the author Andrew Kessler - who set up a "one book" store in 2011 in New York (USA) with the purpose of self-promoting his works.

There, only his book "Summer of the Martian" was for sale. However, unlike Morioka Shoten, this store only existed temporarily for about a month.

Shop motto – Just one room with just one book.

The sales method may sound "crazy" at first, but it actually has very positive results, and so Morioka still intends to continue operating the bookstore in the future.

With large bookstores dominating the market and e-books becoming more and more popular, places like Morioka Shoten are sure to be a go-to for readers who want to learn the true value of books.
