Positive effects from the results of the "2-in-1" exam.

(Baonghean) - A high average score and over 95% of candidates passing the national high school graduation exam are outstanding results for Nghe An students. This will certainly have a significant impact on university admissions this year, especially for universities located in the province.

According to the results recently announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, in examination cluster No. 25, chaired by Vinh University with 37,000 candidates, only 160 candidates received failing grades (1 point or less). The local examination cluster had 464 candidates with failing grades. For other subjects, although the Vinh cluster had the largest number of candidates nationwide, the average scores were quite high. The highest average score was in Geography with 9,940 out of 10,854 candidates scoring above 5 points (91.58%), followed by Physics at 82.3%, Chemistry at 81.53%, Mathematics at 67.56%, History at 66.69%, and Biology at 53.1%. Specifically for English, despite being a compulsory subject with nearly 32,000 candidates, this year was a "poor year" for the subject, with only 3,600 candidates achieving an average score of 5 or higher (1.57%). The percentage of candidates scoring between 6 and 9 points was only 7%.

Furthermore, a significant proportion of candidates achieved good or excellent scores. For example, in Mathematics, out of 24,144 candidates who scored 5 or higher, 14,905 scored between 6 and 7.5 points, 3,900 scored between 8 and 10 points, and 962 scored between 9 and 10 points. In Literature, nearly 10,000 candidates scored between 6 and 7.5 points, and 81 candidates scored between 9 and 10 points. Notably, the Vinh examination cluster had the highest number of perfect scores (10 points), with 37 candidates achieving this score. This included 10 perfect scores in Mathematics, 21 in Chemistry, 3 in Biology, 2 in Geography, and 1 in English.

This result represents a success in this year's exam design, as the initial plan was to have 60% of the questions at a basic level to ensure candidates could achieve an average score, and the remaining 40% at an advanced level. In fact, in Nghe An, 95.8% of candidates met this requirement and were eligible for graduation (the national average is 91.58%). The scores are quite high, and it is expected that the minimum admission scores for universities and colleges may be 1-2 points higher than in previous years. Some teachers also believe that candidates choosing natural science subjects with combinations such as Math - Physics - Chemistry, Math - Chemistry - Biology… or social science subjects like Literature - History - Geography will not experience significant changes in the admission process. However, for candidates registering for combinations including English, the entrance scores may be lower, as the percentage of candidates with average scores is very low. This is different from previous years because English is a subject that candidates score well in.

According to regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training, from August 1st to August 20th, universities will begin accepting applications for the first round of admissions. This is also the first year the Ministry of Education and Training has implemented this admissions process. This has surprised many candidates because instead of registering in advance as before, this year candidates must base their university choices on their exam scores. Choosing which university to attend is difficult, especially for candidates with average exam scores.

Universities will also face many difficulties in student recruitment, especially those not in the top tier. At Vinh University, this year the school has over 5,000 enrollment slots for 43 majors. In previous years, nearly 90% of the students admitted to the school were from Nghe An and the two neighboring provinces of Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh. Regarding the 2015 exam, even though this was the exam cluster with the largest number of candidates nationwide, the school is still unable to determine how many students will apply to the school as their first choice.

Sharing his thoughts on this, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Binh, Head of the Training Department at Vinh University, said: "For top-tier universities, recruitment isn't too difficult because the number of applicants is sure to be high. However, for lower-tier universities, ensuring both sufficient student enrollment and quality is not easy. Therefore, while the Ministry's policy is to allocate 75% of the quota to first-choice applicants, we will allocate about 80%… To facilitate applicants, the university has developed a rather 'open' admission plan. For example, previously the university only had traditional exam blocks like A, B, C, D… but this year there are many new subject combinations, and some majors are simultaneously accepting applications from up to four combinations."

For example, in the Law group, candidates can register with combinations such as Math - Physics - Chemistry, Math - Physics - English, Literature - History - Geography, Math - Literature - English; in the Economics group (Finance - Banking, Accounting, Business Administration, Investment Economics), candidates can also register with 3 combinations: Math - Physics - Chemistry, Math - Physics - English, Math - Literature - English. In addition, to ensure students feel secure studying at the university, the school is also developing new training methods to create favorable conditions for students during their studies, such as studying two majors, credit-based training, etc. The school is focusing on output standards and concise training programs to adapt to the training of human resources… At Nghe An University of Economics, 70% of the university and 70% of the college admission quotas are based on the results of the national high school graduation exam with subject combinations meeting the minimum threshold announced by the Ministry. In addition, the remaining 30% of the school's admissions will be based on high school graduates and their high school academic results. The requirements are not too difficult if the candidate has graduated and has an average score of 6.0 or higher in the three subjects of the chosen major in grade 11 and the first semester of grade 12 (three semesters).

At Vinh Medical University, although the university has not faced significant difficulties in student recruitment in recent years, and the competition ratio and entrance scores are quite high, Professor Nguyen Canh Phu, the Vice Rector of the university, stated that the university plans to accept all candidates based on their first choice. Only if the minimum quality assurance threshold is too low will the university consider accepting candidates based on their second choice.

Although this is the first time the Ministry has applied the new admission method, according to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Binh, Head of the Training Department at Vinh University: Candidates should not be overly worried. The important thing is to carefully review the admission regulations of each university, examine the quotas for each major and faculty, and then, based on their exam scores, choose appropriate nguyện vọng (preferences). Another advantage is that during the application process, universities will continuously update candidates' scores, so candidates can track their ranking in relation to the overall group of candidates. If they see a low chance of admission, they can withdraw their application and submit it to another university with a higher chance of admission. However, candidates should also note that once they have been admitted to a major or university, they will no longer be eligible for subsequent admission rounds, so they need to carefully consider and choose the most suitable university and major, especially in the first admission round.
