High-rise buildings have sprung up in the capital Pyongyang, ski resorts and theme parks have opened, and a small private economy has been allowed to develop across the country.
Stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, and even hamburgers and pancakes, have appeared on the streets of the capital as North Korea struggles to cope with international sanctions imposed over its missile and nuclear tests in recent years.
But with the recent summits between North Korea and South Korea, China, and the United States, changes can happen very quickly in this mysterious country. Here are some pictures of the daily changes in the daily lives of North Koreans:
