In the current Vietnamese team, there are three remaining players from the generation of the team under Calisto that won the AFF Cup 2008. They include defender Dinh Luat, midfielder Thanh Luong and captain striker Cong Vinh.

Mr. Calisto is a familiar face to the Vietnamese football fans, and has twice led the national team of the S-shaped country. In 2008, this Portuguese coach led the Vietnamese team to the AFF Cup 2008 championship. This is the first regional title of Vietnamese football at the national team level since re-integration in the early 1990s.

In his first term leading the Vietnamese team, Coach Calisto also participated in the AFF Cup 2002 and won third place with the team, after defeating Malaysia in the bronze medal match.

Mr. Calisto left Vietnamese football in early March 2011, then went to Thailand to lead Muangthong United Club. However, the strategist born in 1953 only stayed in Thailand for a short time before returning home, having two terms leading Pacos Ferreira Club. Between the two periods at Pacos, Calisto also spent eight months working in Africa, leading Angolan Club, Libolo.

The photo of him showing off the Portuguese flag with his student Vu Phong during the coronation ceremony of the AFF Cup 2008 was chosen by Calisto as the profile photo of his Facebook page.

According to an announcement on his Facebook page, Calisto started working for Portuguese TV channel A Bola on October 24, as a commentator.

Despite being away for nearly six years, this coach still pays great attention to Vietnamese football. Last September, Mr. Calisto even returned to cheer on his old team, Long An FC, in the relegation play-off match with Viettel.
