During the match at Veltins Arene, Girard and Schalke coach Huub Stevens had an exchange of words on the sidelines. Cameras caught Girard making a derogatory hand gesture towards his opponent.

The UEFA Hearing Committee immediately met to investigate the Montpellier captain's unsatisfactory conduct and a penalty was issued. Accordingly, Girard will be banned from directing 2 matches and fined 5,000 euros, of which the second match ban will be "suspended" for the next 3 years.

In addition, Montpellier, whose fans used flares in the stadium and threw objects onto the pitch to protest against their players being booked, was also fined 17,000 euros.

Montpellier will have three days to appeal from receiving the written notice of UEFA's decision.
