UEFA has decided to fine Montpellier €17,000 and ban coach Rene Girard from the touchline for one match following their 2-2 draw with Schalke in the Champions League.

During the match at Veltins Arena, an exchange of words took place on the touchline between Girard and Schalke coach Huub Stevens. Cameras captured Girard making a derogatory hand gesture towards his opponent.

UEFA's hearing committee immediately convened to investigate the Montpellier manager's misconduct, and a penalty was handed down. Girard will be banned from coaching for two matches and fined €5,000, with the ban for the second match suspended for the next three years.

In addition, Montpellier was fined 17,000 euros for fans using flares in the stadium and throwing objects onto the pitch to protest their players receiving yellow cards.

Montpellier will have three days to appeal from the date they receive the UEFA decision.
