Experts believe the tiger contracted the disease from a zookeeper who may have been asymptomatic or had no obvious symptoms at the time.

“A four-year-old Malayan tigress named Nadie has tested positive for COVID-19. She, her sister Azul, two other Amur tigers and three African leopards have developed a dry cough and are expected to recover,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, another Amur tiger living next to the infected tiger showed no symptoms of the disease. In addition, experts examined a male Malayan tiger, two Amur tigers, as well as several leopards, cheetahs, puma and servals, and found them all to be healthy.

The organization has taken precautions for allcThe zookeepers care for the animals and other felines living in the four zoos in the WCS network.

The Associated Press noted that this is the first case of coronavirus infection in an animal in the United States, and the first case of a tiger being infected in the world.

Previously, there was information that according to a study by scientists at the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute, cats are susceptible to COVID-19. A representative of the Belgian Crisis Steering Committee for Coronavirus Prevention and Control also said at the end of March that the country recorded a case of coronavirus transmission from owner to cat. Another case in Hong Kong found a cat infected with coronavirus, while the owner was also hospitalized for COVID-19.
