According to data from the General Statistics Office: In June 2013, there were 36,000 households experiencing hunger nationwide, a 22% increase compared to the same period last year, corresponding to 153,000 people suffering from hunger. Overall, in the first six months of this year, there were 323,200 instances of households experiencing hunger, corresponding to 1,351,000 people suffering from hunger.

The situation of people facing food shortages in rural areas occurs mainly in the northern midland and mountainous provinces; the North Central region; the Central coastal region and the Central Highlands.
To address the issue of hunger among the population, since the beginning of the year, all levels of government, agencies, and organizations from the central to local levels have provided more than 40,000 tons of food and over 360 billion VND in famine relief and social assistance to households suffering from hunger.
