On the morning of August 19, a section of Le Van Luong Street running through the new urban area of Duong Noi, Ha Dong, collapsed into a hole 10 meters long, 5 meters wide and more than 2 meters deep.By early afternoon of August 19, the death hole was more than 50m wide.2continued to show signs of spreading.

According to some residents in the area, the subsidence started at around 7am on August 19. At that time, a bus had just arrived, the back of the bus fell into the edge of the hole but the bus was lucky to get through. This section of the road has not been flooded due to heavy rain in recent days.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Giap - Chief Inspector of Hanoi Department of Transport - said that the Department of Transport has coordinated with relevant units to block the drainage system about 1km away from the subsidence area to prevent water erosion. At the same time, the Department of Transport also divided the road lanes around the subsidence area, regulating traffic through other roads.

Death pit seen from Song Da Thang Long project

At 1:00 p.m. on August 19, the hole had spread to the adjacent road.

The sinkhole also seriously affected nearby structures. As of 12:50 p.m. on August 19, according to records at the scene, the road barrier was still showing signs of being pulled downwards.

Explaining the appearance of the sinkhole along the road, Mr. Giap said that the Song Da Corporation's building project was built right next to the road, and the pavement support piles had just been removed, so the ground underneath was hollow, combined with heavy rain, causing it to sink deep into the roadbed. In addition, the water supply pipe was broken, causing the water to swirl strongly.

In addition, according to Mr. Giap, the depth of the hole has not been measured yet due to the continuous flow of water and the impact of soil erosion. “In my opinion, the quality of the road is not a problem because if the road sinks, it must be due to the rubber grooves peeling and breaking,” Mr. Giap affirmed.

At 1:00 p.m. on August 19, the "death hole" continued to swallow more of the median strip on Le Van Luong Street and showed signs of spreading.
