Miss Türkiye gets suspended sentence for insulting President
The Independent newspaper published information about Miss Türkiye 2006 - Merve Buyuksara - being sentenced to 14 months in prison, suspended, after making insulting comments about President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on her personal page.

In a trial held in Istanbul, beauty queen Merve Buyuksara was found guilty of poems she shared on Instagram in 2014, which included words mocking the then-President of Türkiye.
The beauty queen's lawyer - Emre Telci - confirmed that he will file a petition against the verdict and appeal to the European Court of Justice.
Miss Merve Buyuksara was one of thousands who shared a poem referencing the Turkish President in 2014. She later deleted the post after being advised by a friend. She said at the time: "I posted it because I found it funny. I had no intention of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan."
