Fire destroys nearly 20 hectares of Melaleuca forest in U Minh Ha.
At noon on April 25th, in Hamlet 16, Nguyen Phich commune, U Minh district, Ca Mau province, approximately 20 hectares of 4-5 year old melaleuca forest belonging to 15 households who had been allocated land for reforestation were burned down.
This is the most damaging forest fire in Ca Mau since the beginning of the dry season. According to initial reports, the cause of the fire was due to people entering the forest to collect honey.

On the evening of April 25th, Mr. Ngo Thanh Dien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of U Minh district, stated that after nearly 7 hours of mobilizing more than 300 forest rangers and local residents to actively fight the fire, the blaze was finally brought under complete control.
Although the authorities in U Minh district have organized many awareness campaigns and strictly prohibited illegal honey harvesting in the forest, many people still lack awareness and do not fully comply with forest protection regulations.
Currently, water levels in the canals have been depleted, creating significant difficulties for forest firefighting efforts during the dry season. Over 41,000 hectares of melaleuca forest in Ca Mau province are under fire alert at dangerous and extremely dangerous levels.
