The United States wishes to strengthen its relationship with Vietnam.

Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and US Secretary of State John Kerry held a telephone conversation on February 16.

Secretary of State John Kerry extended his best wishes to the Vietnamese people on the occasion of the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake; affirming that the Obama administration's policy during its second term continues to value and promote relations with Vietnam.

Minister Pham Binh Minh thanked Secretary of State John Kerry for his phone call in the early days of the new year and expressed his hope that Mr. Kerry, in his capacity as Secretary of State, would continue to contribute to the development of relations between Vietnam and the United States, for the benefit of the people of both countries, and for peace, stability, and development in the region and the world.

The two Foreign Ministers discussed a number of measures to promote bilateral relations and exchanged visits in 2013.
