The UN Council demands that Syria cease its attacks on Qusair.

On May 29, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution condemning Syria and its use of foreign fighters, and calling on the Syrian government to stop attacking civilians in the town of Qusair with missiles and other heavy weapons.

The aforementioned document, submitted by Qatar, Türkiye, and the United States, was adopted by the 47-member UN body based in Geneva (Switzerland) with 36 votes in favor, one vote against (Venezuela), and eight abstentions. Two delegations did not participate in the vote.

In related developments, Syrian state media reported that forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad recaptured an air base in the village of Dabaa near the town of Qusair on May 29.

This is a major blow to the rebel forces in the week-long conflict with government troops backed by Hezbollah fighters.

President Assad's army and Hezbollah fighters have besieged the town of Qusair from three sides, and controlling Dabaa, north of Qusair, would leave the town surrounded on all sides.
