(Baonghean.vn) - On October 28, the United Nations General Assembly voted to elect 14 new members to the Human Rights Council for the 2017-2019 term. Russia did not become a member of the Council due to problems in Syria.

Starting from January 1, 2007, the new members of the Council include: representatives from Africa: Egypt, Rwanda, Tunisia and South Africa; representatives from the Asia-Pacific region: China, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Japan; representatives from Latin American countries: Brazil and Cuba; representatives from Western Europe and other countries: the United Kingdom and the United States; representatives from Eastern European countries: Hungary and Croatia.

Among these, the current members are China, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and South Africa. By December 31, 2016, Algeria, Morocco, Namibia, Vietnam, Maldives, Macedonia, Mexico and France will end their terms.

This term, Russia is not on the list of member countries of the Council. Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Mr. Vitalin Churkin, said "The voting results were very close, Russia only received 112/193 votes in favor, in which the two competing countries were Hungary with 144 votes, Croatia with 112 votes".

One of the reasons Russia did not receive approval was the conflicts in Syria. But in the next term, Russia will definitely become a member of the Human Rights Council - Mr. Churkin affirmed.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is an organization under the United Nations General Assembly, established in 2006 to replace the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. This Council is responsible for promoting, promoting, upholding respect for and protecting human rights around the world, and handling cases of human rights violations.
