According to AFP news agency, two female suspects, Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, will appear in court today (October 2) in the trial of the case in which they are accused of using VX nerve agent to kill Kim Jong Nam on February 13 while he was waiting to board a plane to Macau at Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Both women face the death penalty if convicted. However, they are expected to have their defense lawyers present evidence from the start of the trial.
Both suspects said they were tricked into taking part in a reality TV prank, and had no idea it was an assassination attempt.
Defense lawyers for the two female suspects believe that the real perpetrators have fled Malaysia and are confident they will prove the women's innocence in court.
Lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, who represents defendant Doan Thi Huong, said: "We believe that at the end of the trial they will probably be acquitted."
The trial will begin today (October 2) at the Sham Alam High Court just outside the capital Kuala Lumpur.
There are still many unanswered questions surrounding the mysterious assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's half-brother, Kim Jong Nam.
Among them is the question of how one could have brought the VX nerve agent into the airport and killed Kim Jong Nam without causing any harm to others.
South Korea accused North Korea of being behind the plot to assassinate Kim Jong Nam. North Korea naturally denied this accusation.
In the developments related to the trial of the two female suspects involved, it is noteworthy that criticisms from lawyers representing the defendants have been noted. They accused Malaysian prosecutors of not cooperating adequately with them in handling the case.
