At the invitation of President Tran Dai Quang, today (March 22), President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae In and his wife arrived in Vietnam, starting a 3-day state visit. The plane carrying President Moon Jae In and his wife is expected to land at Noi Bai International Airport - Hanoi at 1:00 p.m.

This is the first official visit to Vietnam by Mr. Moon Jae In as President. The visit takes place in the context of the increasingly positive development of the Vietnam - Korea strategic cooperative partnership with regular high-level exchanges and contacts.

In recent times, the two countries have had frequent contacts between high-ranking leaders. In July 2017, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Germany; in November 2017, President Tran Dai Quang met with President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in on the occasion of the APEC Summit Week in Da Nang, Vietnam; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea Kang Kieng Hoa on the sidelines of the 50th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in the Philippines in August 2017.

South Korea is the 4th largest economy in Asia and the 11th largest in the world. For Vietnam, South Korea is one of the most important economic partners, the first partner in investment and the second in development cooperation, trade and tourism.

In the first two months of 2018, South Korea ranked second in foreign direct investment in Vietnam (after Singapore), with a total newly-registered investment capital of 243.6 million USD, accounting for 17.5% of total investment capital. Vietnam is currently the largest recipient of aid from South Korea.

Regarding trade, in 2017, bilateral trade turnover reached 61.5 billion USD, up 41.29%. Of which, Vietnam's export turnover reached 14.8% USD, imports reached 46.7 billion USD. Korea was Vietnam's largest trade deficit market in 2017. In the first 2 months of 2018, bilateral trade turnover reached 9.6 billion USD, of which exports reached 2.6 billion USD (up 36.4%), imports reached 7 billion USD (up 18.7%).

President Tran Dai Quang welcomed and welcomed the State visit of President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae In, welcoming the New Southern Policy of the Republic of Korea for the goal of peace, cooperation and development.

President Tran Dai Quang said that the two countries need to enhance the exploitation of complementarities and cooperation potential, and hope that Korea will pay attention to and increase technological support, carry out industrialization, modernization, sustainable development, and enhance competitiveness.

The Korean side also expressed its hope and belief that the success of President Moon Jae In's visit to Vietnam will create momentum for the two countries to achieve more practical results in the fields of cooperation.

President Moon Jae In's state visit to Vietnam will last from March 22 to March 24.
