More than 13.9 billion VND registered to support people with disabilities and orphans in 2017

(Baonghean.vn) - The attention of some local authorities and committees... on vocational training for people with disabilities is not high; awareness of people with disabilities themselves and their families about vocational training is still limited; a part of the community still has a discriminatory attitude about the quality of labor of people with disabilities...

These were the issues raised at the workshop on Replicating the livelihood support model “50-50 Program for hunger eradication and poverty reduction” for people with disabilities and orphans, contributing to the implementation of the goal of sustainable poverty reduction and new rural construction in the period 2017-2020, held in Vinh City on the morning of May 16.

The province currently has 222,180 people with disabilities and orphans, of which over 200,000 people suffer from various types of disabilities such as motor, visual, language, hearing, neurological, intellectual and other disabilities.

In recent times, with the policies of the Party and the State, the attention and support of all classes of people, businesses, philanthropists, etc., the material and spiritual life of people with disabilities and orphans has gradually improved. Vocational training and job creation for people with disabilities have seen many remarkable improvements.

From 2012 to 2016, the province recruited and provided vocational training, creating jobs for about 5,545 people with disabilities. At all levels, the Association for the Protection of People with Disabilities and Orphans, in 6 years of implementing the 50-50 hunger eradication and poverty reduction program, has helped nearly 200,000 people with disabilities and orphans with a total amount of nearly 75 billion VND.

At the workshop, representatives of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, associations at all levels as well as typical disabled people in localities frankly pointed out many limitations in the practice of supporting livelihoods for people with disabilities and orphans. Many opinions emphasized that the attention of some local Party committees and authorities... on vocational training for people with disabilities is not high; awareness of disabled people and their families about vocational training is still limited; a part of the community still has a discriminatory attitude about the quality of labor of people with disabilities...

Speaking at the workshop, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Minh Thong acknowledged and highly appreciated the activities of the Association for the Protection of People with Disabilities and Orphans as well as the generosity of sponsors, organizations and individuals inside and outside the province.

He suggested that in the coming time, it is necessary to strengthen propaganda work on the rights of people with disabilities and orphans; actively mobilize resources to develop programs and projects; innovate working methods, closely coordinate with the Vietnam Fatherland Front and its member organizations, associations and unions, and more effectively support people with disabilities and orphans to improve their lives.

Also at the workshop, the Provincial Association for the Protection of People with Disabilities and Orphans organized a sponsorship reception and registered to implement the 2017 program with a total amount of 13 billion 920 million VND.
